The Mission Craft Pottery Project

by Ed Dobbins

The Mission Craft Pottery Project is the history of the cement pottery of Harold Horine. Horine made and sold Como Craft from his family home in Hollister, Missouri. How this unique pottery is made and was marketed is explored. This book takes a journey from his family home to the desert southwest to a place called the Desert Mission in Sunnyslope Arizona. An agreement between Desert Mission Director Joseph Hillhouse and Horine was reached to allow the Desert Mission to make the pottery with “the idea of bringing aid to Sunnyslope tuberculars”. The pottery was used as both a fundraising effort of the Desert Mission as well as an occupational therapy for the people suffering from lung ailments that the Mission served.
