SUMMARY:Preserving Soldiers Stories
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us for a powerful and heartfelt presentation honoring the remarkable women of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion—better known as the Six Triple Eight. As the only all-Black\, all-women unit deployed overseas during World War II\, these trailblazing service members took on an enormous mission: to sort and deliver a multi-year backlog of millions of letters and packages destined for American soldiers. \nIn this talk\, Preserving Our Soldiers’ Stories\, we explore how the Six Triple Eight brought hope and connection to troops across Europe while overcoming racism\, sexism\, and the challenges of wartime service. Through inspiring stories\, historical insights\, and personal accounts\, we will shine a light on their courage\, innovation\, and long-overdue recognition. \nPlease join us this Saturday at 11 am we honor these unsung heroes and ensure that their stories—and the stories of all who served—are preserved for future generations. We hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Legend City Exhibit at the Sunnyslope Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:Come join Sunnyslope Historical Society and Museum is celebrating Legend City’s 60th Anniversary.  Legend City opened on June 29\, 1963.  It hosted a number of attractions such as the Lost Dutchman Mine ride\, Cochise’s Stronghold river ride\, Sky Ride\, Penny Arcade\, Miniature Golf\, Log Jammer\, and Iron Horse on the Legend City Railroad. TV show hosts Wallace and Ladmo appeared at Legend City virtually every weekend. Vonda Kay Van Dyke\, later Miss America 1965\, performed a popular ventriloquism act at the park’s Golden Palace Saloon. It was also home to the ‘Pipeline’\, a skateboarding skate park added in 1965.[2] \nOriginally planned as an Old West theme park by Phoenix artist Louis E. Crandall\, Legend City endured a series of closings\, bankruptcies and ownership changes throughout the 1960s and 1970s.  It was never a significant financial success. However; Legend City is still remembered fondly and held in high regard by locals who knew and frequented the park in its heyday. \nThe land was eventually purchased in 1982 by the Salt River Project\, which closed the park permanently after the 1983 season. Legend City was then dismantled to the ground to make way for new corporate offices for SRP. \nWe invite you to visit the Legend City exhibit at the museum during our Fall Opening on Saturday\, September 16 from 2 pm to 4 pm. \nIf you can’t make our Fall Opening\, don’t miss the Legend City exhibit!  It will be on display during our regular hours after September 16th: Tuesday\, Thursday or Friday 10 am – Noon. \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Women of the West: Untold Stories from American History
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Jana Bommersbach \nBesides Calamity Jane and Annie Oakley\, any Western women come to mind? Probably not—not because they weren’t just as important to settling the West\, but because history was so focused on the goons and gunfighters\, it forgot the women. So it’s a surprise that a 16 year-old Shoshone girl from Dakota Territory named Sacagawea would become the most celebrated woman in American history. It’s little known that Sharlot Hall isn’t just a museum in Prescott\, but was a real woman who saved Arizona’s statehood. It’s a shock to learn Colorado’s first female journalist got a notorious cannibal out of prison. And oh\, the secrets of the most famous Indian captive in American history—Olive Oatman. Western women finally get their due in this presentation that tells what history forgot to mention! \nCome join us for this free event.  Seating is limited.  Refreshments served. \n \nJana Bommersbach is one of Arizona’s most honored and respected journalists. She has won accolades in every facet of her career— investigative reporter\, magazine columnist\, television commentator and author of nationally acclaimed books. She currently writes for True West magazine\, digging up the true stories behind the popular myths\, with an emphasis on Arizona’s real history and women of the Old West. Her insight\, knowledge and wit produce exuberant\, riveting speeches that always garner rave reviews. \nThis event is in partnership with AZ Humanities and Sunnyslope Historical Society.
